Anne Campbell Campaigning for Cambridge

Hands off Marshall's

I recently organised a public meeting in Cherry Hinton to discuss the plans to build thousands of new houses on the site of Marshall's airport.

The Cambridge East Area Action Plan proposes that Marshall's Airport should move out of Cambridge so that 12,000 new houses can be built on the site. I feel strongly that there is a need for more affordable housing in Cambridge, but there are many problems with developing on this site. In particular, the full transport implications have not been assessed in an area of Cambridge where there already existing problems. The proposed development would mean an additional 55,000 trips a day, of which 25% would be during peak hours.

The proposals also depend on Marshall's moving to a new site, but I feel that Marshall's should be left to develop their business until such time that they judge it feasible to move without undue pressure being put upon them.

Other sites for development have been identified such as Waterbeach, and these are far more accessible by public transport.
