Anne Campbell Campaigning for Cambridge

Thank you

It has been a privilege to serve the people of Cambridge for the last 13 years and to work with a progressive Labour government for the last 8 years.

I want to pay tribute to all the hard work of those who have supported me - all the volunteers, Labour activists and Labour voters - but particularly to my agent Alex Mayer.

I am proud of my achievements after 13 years of working for Cambridge:

- Putting child care on the local and national agenda - from Opportunity Links receiving up to 15 million hits per month by parents seeking practical childcare information, to my pivotal contribution to a national childcare strategy which has already resulted in benefits for thousands of families. I know I have helped to create a real legacy which will continue to change the lives of many thousands of families - and especially women.

- I have seen a growth in funding for research and development in science and technology from £1.3 billion to £2.8 billion - which even the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, has admitted was largely down to my efforts. This will continue to bring real benefits for Cambridge - where companies are making the most of research and development opportunities.

- I hope that the work I have done to support small and medium sized companies in getting their share of government R&D contracts will be brought to fruition, and Cambridge will get some of the £20m of support that should come to companies here.

- I am proud of bringing people, communities and agencies together to find solutions for real problems - I am thinking especially of the anti social behaviour problems that have faced Cambridge residents on Mill Road, in Arbury, Kings Hedges and Cherry Hinton - where with a joint effort we have taken great steps forward using some of the government's ASB tools.

- I have championed tenants' rights - bringing in the tenancy deposit scheme which has helped students and private sector tenants in Cambridge and across the UK.

I could go on - but I will mention one more project which combines two of my main passions - women and science - ten years ago I was instrumental in setting up AWISE which has helped women into science and engineering.

Finally, I hope I might be particularly associated with two images - one as the MP on the bicycle - and the second as the first MP who had a website. I have used new technology to be inclusive through establishing Cambridge Online City, which is ensuring wider access to information and services for those who do not normally access the internet.
